Cathedral Lighting
A massive Black Walnut tree created deep shade in a large area of this backyard. There was little color or contrast in the garden area beneath it.
To create an English garden here, I recommended removing an entire grove of Acanthus (Bear’s Breeches), to open up the sunny areas for a rose gallery. Next, I suggested creating “cathedral lighting”, a technique where specific tree branches are cut away. Shafts of light filter down on a new scheme of Lady’s Mantle, Foxgloves and Delphiniums. Tulips and Daffodils will be added for Spring color. Behind the rose bushes, a large Viburnum (Japanese Snowball), Clematis vine, and variegated shrub completes the scheme.
